Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO utilizes organic strategies to appear in search engine rankings and efforts are made to increase the website traffic. There are two components of SEO: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-Page SEO includes the following things:
• Using selective keywords into heading tags, title tags, Meta descriptions, etc.
• Optimized speed of page loading
• Clean page URLs
• Quality blog posts
• Google authorship incorporation

Off-Page SEO includes the activities mentioned below:
• Social bookmarking
• Creating high quality backlink profile
• Social sharing signals etc.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEM uses paid strategies to appear in the search results and involves website promotion via increasing your website’s visibility in the search engine results via advertising and optimization. It is important to note that SEM includes SEO along with other search marketing tactics.

Apart from search engine optimization, SEM utilizes pay-per-click listings (PPC), paid search, and advertisements. Usually, PPC campaigns are an integral part of SEM activities. Using SEP and paid search falls under SEM activities.

The Main Difference

Both SEO and SEM are often used interchangeably as stated earlier. But they are not the same. The main difference between the two is that SEO is a component of SEM and SEM includes different components of paid search like SSM (social media marketing) and PPC (pay-per-click).

Although both SEO and SEM work together and go hand in hand, they are not the same and should not be used interchangeably.
